Wednesday season 2 was teased at TUDUM 2023 on June 17, 2023. We learned a little new information, and we’ve shared what to expect in the new season. Oh, and more good news, production on Wednesday season 2 is scheduled to get started later this year.
Fans around the world are waiting for Wednesday season 2, but it looks like the wait for Wednesday season 2 might be even longer than originally anticipated. While that’s not good news, there is a former Addams Family cast member that might be joining the Wednesday season 2 cast.
Wednesday is officially one of the biggest Netflix shows of all time, and from the final moments of the first season, Wednesday season 2 looked like it was definitely going to happen on Netflix. Then, fans didn’t hear anything for several months, but that all changed with some recent developments in 2023.
Fans fell in love with Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams, and now, they can’t wait to see what’s new about season 2. To help fans find the most up-to-date information about the new season, we shared everything we know so far about the new season.
We’ll update this story as Netflix shares more information about Wednesday season 2. The latest update was made on June 17, 2023.

Wednesday season 2 is happening
After several months of waiting with very little news about Wednesday season 2, Netflix finally renewed Wednesday for season 2 in early January 2023.
If any Netflix show were a slam dunk to be renewed, Wednesday was that show. The show ranks No. 2 behind Stranger Things season 4 as the most popular Netflix US release of all time. It’s No. 3 behind Squid Game and Stranger Things season 4 on the list of the most-watched Netflix releases of all time. Netflix is not going to cancel a show that successful.
Wednesday season 2 has not started filming yet
Unfortunately, we’re in for a long wait until Wednesday season 2. As of June 2023, production has not started on the new season yet. That’s unfortunate for those hoping to see Wednesday season 2 soon. It’s going to be a while before the new season premieres.
In June 2023, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas gave an update on production during the grid walk at the Spanish Grand Prix. Douglas started to say that he’s not working right now, but that Zeta-Jones started filming in the fall. Zeta-Jones, then, shares that production is supposed to start later this fall or by the end of the year.
Jenna Ortega was on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and she told Fallon that a writers’ room had just been put together and they were talking about where the season will go. So, that’s great, obviously, but it’s not super great news for fans who want to see the season soon. Obviously, the season has to be written and planned before they can move into production.
In April 2023, Ortega shared that prep for Wednesday season 2 had officially started. We don’t know exactly where in the process they are, but with the writers room getting put together in March 2023, it’s likely that they are still mapping out the season and getting the episodes sorted.
Here’s what Ortega told Glamour when asked about her summer plans and Wednesday season 2:
“No vacations or anything like that. We are starting to prep season two of Wednesday, which…has been exciting. Just developing new storylines and seeing where characters are going. Starting those conversations has been really, really fun. I think it’s going to be bigger and better, which is cool.”
According to reports, the cast and crew started production in the fall of 2021 and wrapped in the spring of 2022 in Romania. The season was released about seven to eight months after production ended, so that’s basically the timeline we’re looking at for Wednesday season 2.
Unfortunately, that timeline might be a little bit off. With the WGA on strike, writers’ room are shutting down and production is on hold for many shows and movies. Some shows have chosen to proceed without writers on set, but it’s risky and not feasible in almost all instances. We know many Netflix shows have shut down or delayed production, including Stranger Things. We have to assume Wednesday is in the position when things were planned to continue through the summer, as Ortega mentioned in the Glamour interview.
Hopefully, the season 2 filming schedule will be a little easier for Ortega, who just revealed to Variety that she was “hysterically crying” on Facetime throughout the exhausting production of season 1.
“I did not get any sleep. I pulled my hair out,” Ortega said. “There’s so many FaceTime calls that my dad answered of me hysterically crying.”
It sounds like the plan is to move forward with production later this year. Hopefully, by then, Netflix and the AMPTP will have offered the writers a deal that they can accepted and everything will be back to business as usual.
Has Netflix announced the Wednesday season 2 release date yet?
Will Wednesday season 2 be released in 2023? That’s the question fans all over the world want to know. Unfortunately, we have some bad news on that front.
The first season came out at the end of 2022, so it would make sense why fans think Wednesday season 2 could be released in 2023. Netflix has not confirmed Wednesday season 2 won’t be coming in 2023, but there’s virtually no chance that will happen.
As discussed, it took about eight months following the end of production on season 1 and the show’s release on Netflix. At the time of publishing, there are only 10 months left in the year, and production, which took six months-ish for season 1, has not started on season 2. Even if the cast and crew started filming Wednesday season 2 in March 2023, there’s no way the season would be done and ready for release by the end of the year.
So, unfortunately, fans will be waiting until 2024 to see Wednesday season 2. We wish it wasn’t so, but that’s the reality of the situation.
More unfortunately, Wednesday isn’t the only big Netflix show we’ll miss in 2023.
Release Prediction: Fall/Winter 2024
Assuming that the production rumors and reports about a fall start are true, we are going to be waiting at least another year from the start of production until Wednesday season 2 is on Netflix.
If they start in September 2023, which is the month being tossed around, we could definitely see the series by the fall of 2024. If the show doesn’t get started filming season 2 until November or something like that, that 2024 release date is very much in question.
We could potentially be waiting until 2025 until Wednesday season 2 is released if that happens.
Has the Writers’ Strike affected Wednesday season 2?
It’s hard to say at this point if or how Wednesday season 2 has been affected by the writers’ strike. Based on the lengthy renewal process and the fact that the writing team waited about six months after the season premiered to even get started, we have to assume that yes, the series has been affected by the writers’ strike.
Stranger Things was supposed to start filming in May 2023, but it’s been delayed. Emily in Paris season 4 was going to start filming this summer with a late 2023 release date, but that’s been delayed. Unless the writers are working well ahead after the first season premiered, we have to assume the writers’ room has also been delayed.
But, it’s not the only reason Wednesday season 2 is going to take a long time. We can’t say why Netflix’s third-biggest premiere of all time took three months to get renewed for a second season, but it’s possible that’s the likely culprit for the big delay. On top of that, this is a series with a big cast that films in Romania. It’s a big production, and all of that must get taken into account.
As mentioned, hopefully, Netflix and the AMPTP will offer what the writers are asking for and everything else gets rolling.
Wednesday season 2 cast
Netflix has not confirmed the cast for season 2, but several cast members and creators have confirmed many of the returnees for the new season of the series. The big one is obviously Tyler. The creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, confirmed he will be back in an interview with Variety.
We shared who is expected to be back for Wednesday season 2:
- Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams
- Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair
- Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin
- Percy Hynes White as Xavier Thorpe
- Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams
- Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams
- Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams
- Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester
- Gwendoline Christie as Principal Larissa Weems
- Jamie McShane as Sheriff Galpin
- Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay
There are a few Wednesday characters who won’t be back for season 2. It’s unclear if Gwendoline Christie will be back. Her character, Principal Weems, was killed in the finale, so it’s TBD if she’ll be back. We sure hope Christie will be involved with season 2! Christina Ricci, who played Laurel Gates/Marilyn Thornhill, is not expected to be back for season 2.
There are also some rumors that Lady Gaga will join the cast for season 2, but that has not been confirmed. Such a huge casting would be major, major news. We’ll just have to wait and see if Netflix is able to pull off something like that!
It also appears that there are some conversations to get Christopher Lloyd involved for season 2. Lloyd originally played Uncle Fester in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values.
Here’s what Lloyd told Yahoo:
“I’ve heard rumors trickling down that I might be coming on. I’m not sure how, but I think Ortega is wonderful.”
That would be really cool to bring Lloyd back for a role in the new season!
There’s a new member of the Addams Family introduced in Wednesday season 2
Emma Meyers, Hunter Doohan, and Joy Sunday read off fan theories during TUDUM 2023. At the end of the video, they confirmed a theory that a new member of the Addams Family will be in Wednesday season 2!
Wednesday season 1 ending explained
At the end of the first season of Wednesday, Wednesday discovered that Tyler was actually the Hyde monster, and he was being controlled by Ms. Thornhill, also known as Laurel Gates, who was taking revenge on Nevermore for being responsible for the deaths of her family members. But, it’s so much deeper than that. There’s even more history between the Addams fam and the Crackstones, which is why Laurel Gates brings back Joseph Crackstone from the dead to destory Nevermore and everyone there.
Thankfully, Wednesday, Enid (who finally wolfs out!), and the gang solve the mystery, stop Crackstone, Tyler, and Laurel, and save the day, but there are some casualties, including the fan-favorite Principal Weems.
What’s next in Wednesday season 2?
For a minute, it looked like Wednesday season 2 wasn’t necessarily going to happen in the season 1 finale. Most of the major storylines had been wrapped up. Tyler had escaped, yes, but Laurel was dead and Crackstone vanquished. Wednesday had some work to do to make up for some of the damage she caused during her investigation, but her emotional arc ended on a high note with her hug and friendship with Enid.
At the last minute, Wednesday is sent threatening text messages from a person who has been following her since she arrived at Nevermore, which seemingly sets the stage for season 2. Who is this person? Why are they threatening her?
This person’s identity and Tyler’s disappearance will likely be major focuses of season 2, but I don’t think that’s where the creative team will stop. I think there are way more surprises and Adamms Family things to be discovered in season 2.
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait quite a long time until we find out what’s in store in the new season. We did get a little bit of a hint of what could be on the way, according to Ortega.
While speaking with Fallon on The Tonight Show, Ortega hinted that more horror and less romance could be on the way in season 2. Here’s what she said:
“I think we want to up, kind of, the horror aspect a little bit and then get Wednesday out of the romantic situation and just let her be her own individual and fight her own crime.”
I’m with it! I hope it works out!
In the Glamour interview, Ortega also teased the characters and new storylines they are developing for season 2.
Jenna Ortega is also producing Wednesday season 2
When Ortega shares these snippets about season 2, we should listen because, in addition to starring as Wednesday Addams in the new season, she’s also going to be a producer on the new season, according to Elle.
Wednesday season 2 rumors
There were so many rumors about Wednesday season 2! It’s crazy when this happens, but my guess is that there were just too many interested parties and not enough information. That’s the perfect recipe for misinformation, which is exactly what happened.
There were rumors and even some reports that Wednesday season 2 was canceled or that Wednesday season 2 was moving to Amazon Prime Video. Those rumors were quickly dispelled by Netflix and other outlets, but they certainly created some fear and anxiety about the future of the series among fans.
How many seasons of Wednesday are there?
Right now, there’s one season on Netflix, and another season of the hit Netflix original in the works.
Wednesday showrunners and producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough confirmed they have plans to make three or four seasons of the series, initially, according to Variety.
For us, it’s always looking at the future, and when we sit down to create a show, it’s looking at multiple seasons, ideally. That’s never expected, but that’s the anticipation that hopefully the show is successful. So you always lay out at least three or four seasons’ worth of potential storylines for the characters.
If things go well, there’s no reason to think that Wednesday wouldn’t be renewed for season 3 and even season 4 in the future. This show is well on its way to becoming, potentially, the most-watched Netflix series of all time.
Jenna Ortega did the Wednesday dance on Saturday Night Live
Ortega hosted Saturday Night Live earlier this year, and to promote the episode, Ortega and the dudes from Please Don’t Destroy did a version of the “Wednesday dance.” Ortega looks less than thrilled.
