The first season of Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton's reimagining of Wednesday Addams was a runaway success for Netflix, and new Wednesday season 2 updates for the Addams Family spinoff have been coming in steadily since it was greenlit. Directed by Tim Burton, Wednesday’s first season follows Wednesday Addams as she’s sent to Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for supernatural “outcasts.” Season 1 primarily consists of the title character learning to adjust to her new school while solving a murder mystery that impacted her parents 30 years ago. While the series surrounds the coming-of-age story of Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday, the spooky members of the iconic Addams family are still integral to the murderous plot.

Wednesday Addams may have already solved season 1’s main mystery by exposing Tyler as the Hyde monster and Ms. Thornhill, A.K.A. Laurel Gates, as the vengeful outcast killer, but Wednesday’s season 1 ending hints that there’s still more story to tell. Wednesday’s season 1 finale makes sure to leave a few burning questions unanswered and loose ends untied, as Jenna Ortega’s gothic character has already made enemies through her murder investigation. As such, it’s more than likely that Wednesday will discover more Addams Family secrets and investigate her new stalker in another season. Here are the Wednesday season 2 updates, including the potential release date, story, and cast.

The Latest Wednesday Season 2 News

Sadly, while Wednesday season 2 updates revealed Netflix is bringing more of the Addams Family's daughter after season 1, it won't be here as soon as many might have hoped. The Writer's Guild of America (WGA) went on strike in May 2023, which has impacted a number of shows. All screenwriters have stopped writing and any projects in active development will end up postponed and delayed until a new deal is reached. The strike started on May 2 and this has affected several major projects, including some big-time streaming service shows like WednesdayHouse of the Dragon, and Last of Us.

While there's been no confirmation of Wednesday season 2 delays yet, there's been concerns due to an already reportedly strained relationship between the show's writers and Wednesday star Jenna Ortega. The actor did an interview where she said she changed some of her lines on set during filming. This angered some commentators online both within and outside the industry, who saw Ortega's openness about the situation as throwing the show's writers under the bus. Ortega openly discussed it in an interview, which some felt was creating unnecessary tension and was borderline unprofessional (despite the validity of her script changes):

"I don't think I've ever had to put my foot down on a set in the way that I had to on Wednesday... There were times on that set where I even became unprofessional in a sense where I just started changing lines. The script supervisor thought I was going with something and then I would have to sit down with the writers and they'd be like, 'Wait, what happened to the scene?' And I would have to go through and explain why I couldn't do certain things."

As a result, some striking writers have taken aim at Jenna with some joke protest signs. One asked her to show up for her shift, since "rewriting is writing." Another wrote, "Without writers, Jenna Ortega will have nothing to punch up!" With the strike asking for several things, including better treatment of writers, it seemed that Ortega's comments insulting the scripts for Wednesday gave them ammunition needed to at least make a point, even if done as a joke. Of course, not all of Ortega's fans took it well and many have lashed out at the striking writers as a result. Whether this will translate to a Wednesday season 2 delay, however, remains to be seen.

Wednesday Season 2 is Confirmed

The Wednesday season 2 updates earlier in the production cycle seemed to spell danger for Netflix, who's keen to keep Wednesday as part of their core original content. While Netflix wanted more Addams Family shows and Wednesday was a massive success, something happened outside of Netflix's control. Amazon acquired MGM and Addams Family is owned by MGM. This made it look like Prime Video could sweep in and pick up the series, taking it away from Netflix. However, Netflix kept hold of the fantasy series, and possibly the shared universe that it wanted to build around her.

Wednesday Season 2 (Predicted) Release Date

Although the gap between seasons of Netflix original shows varies, Wednesday season 2’s release date can be predicted based on the production timeline of season 1. Netflix officially ordered Wednesday season 1 in February 2021, with the show beginning filming in September 2021. Wednesday premiered a little over a year after filming began. There's currently no word on when filming will being for Wednesday season 2 or if the season is even written yet, so it won't likely premiere until some point in 2024 at the earliest. It is likely there won't be any Wednesday season 2 updates concerning the filming until after the WGA strike ends.
