Finn Wolfhard addresses whether he thinks Mike will die in Stranger Things season 5 and lays out his ideal scenario for the character’s demise.
Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard reveals that he's okay with Mike's death in season 5, but only under one condition. First released on Netflix in 2016, the Duffer Brothers horror/ fantasy series has since become one of the streamer's most popular offerings. Stranger Things most recently released season 4 last year, continuing the story of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike, Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Will (Noah Schnapp), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Max (Sadie Sink), Hopper (David Harbour), and the rest of the gang as they attempt to stop a formidable new villain called Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). The series is confirmed to return for season 5, which will serve as the epic conclusion to the story.
In a recent interview with GQ in which he answers fan questions on the Internet, Wolfhard addresses whether he thinks Mike will die in Stranger Things season 5.
While the star doesn't think that Mike will actually meet his end in the upcoming season, he does reveal that if Mike sacrificed himself as part of an epic moment he might be okay with it. Check out Wolfhard's full comment below when asked if Mike will die in season 5:
“I hope not. Or, you know what? I don’t know. Depends when. If it’s, like, one of those things where it’s like in the first episode cold open, no. Last episode, Mike saves everyone’s life and it’s like ‘oh, yeah, Mike!’ You know, everyone is cheering and shouting “yes!” you know I’d do that, maybe. No, I don’t think he will.”
Who Could Die In Stranger Things Season 5
The Duffer Brothers have shown that they're certainly not opposed to killing off characters in Stranger Things, with Barb (Shannon Purser), Bob (Sean Astin), and, most recently, Eddie (Joseph Quinn), all having met their end. Season 5, as the last and seemingly most epic one yet, could very well feature the death of a beloved character. In the Stranger Things season 4 finale Max has most of her limbs broken and is blinded, ending the show in a coma with her fate left up in the air. It's possible that she will eventually succumb to her injuries, but it seems far more likely that, after Vecna's brutal attack, she will eventually recover and ultimately survive.
After Hopper's fake-out death in the season 3 finale, he also feels fairly likely to survive season 5, but it's still entirely possible that he will die for real this time before the dust has settled. The core group of characters, including Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Will, and Lucas, will seemingly all come under threat like never before in Stranger Things season 5, with Eleven, in particular, often bearing the brunt of the Upside Down's wrath. While it's possible that Eleven could die, it seems more likely that audiences will have to say goodbye to characters who aren't part of the core crew, like Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Robin (Maya Hawke), or Murray (Brett Clifford Gelman).
Although Stranger Things has killed off some beloved characters in the past, the characters that bite the dust usually appear in more of a supporting capacity, meaning the core group of heroes could be safe. That being said, with Vecna, the Mindflayer, and potentially a Demogorgon all gearing up for a massive fight in Hawkins, Stranger Things season 5 could feature some surprising demises. It's unclear if Mike will actually die in the upcoming season but, if he does, Wolfhard is evidently hoping for an epic, cheer-worthy sendoff.
