There is a lot of speculation from fans regarding a possible time jump for the final season of Stranger Things. Here's why a time jump should happen.
Since the release of the first season in 2016, Stranger Things has been one of the more binge-worthy shows streaming on Netflix. With its winning combination of nerdiness, nostalgia, horror, and action, it is easy to see why this show’s popularity skyrocketed the way it did. The charm and moxie of each cast member drew the audience in from the start, and the character development and story arcs are what kept the viewers coming back for more.
Matt and Ross Duffer wrote a letter to fans to explain their plan for the final season.
Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four but — as you’ll see for yourselves — we are now hurtling toward our finale.
Through the seasons, the audience watched the characters grow and evolve in ways almost forced upon them because of the situations in which they would find themselves. No “normal” teenager, either from a big city or a small town like Hawkins, has ever had to deal with anything supernatural, let alone some conspiracies and coverups related to the Russians and experimentation. It is the constant bombardment of ever-worsening circumstances that shaped the characters into the people the audience fell in love with.
Why a Time Jump Needs to Happen
The Duffer Brothers have been transparent from the beginning of this journey, saying that they planned for this entire story to pan out over four or five seasons. After Strangers Things season 3 concluded, the real world was thrown into a state of disarray with the pandemic and the accompanying restrictions that came with it.
This forced the cast and crew into a short-term hiatus and directly affected the team creating and filming the show because not only could they not meet to write or film, but they also faced an issue unique to people working with young actors: how would they explain aging when they were supposed to still pass as teenagers? Thankfully, as soon as they were able to commence filming, season four was in the works. Because of this, all the younger cast members still were able to pass for their teenage counterparts, thus leaving the timeline of the penultimate season four still intact.

However, with the time needed to plan and write the fifth and final season, the show creators and writers had to come up with a solution to accommodate the growing and maturing younger cast. A time jump, even a small one a few years into the future, would be the best way.
Backstories or events that may have occurred in said time jump could easily be explained through character dialog and actions just as the writers have done in previous seasons. The bonds between the characters over the years have wavered, but ultimately grown stronger despite the tribulations they have faced, and the chemistry among the cast members only serves to solidify this.
All of this plays into the deep emotional investment the viewers clearly have for the characters and would make a time jump in the show actually work. Not one fan of Stranger Things doesn’t want to see what will happen to the kids of Hawkins, Indiana when they grow up a little.
What We Know About Season 5 So Far
There isn’t a lot known yet about the final season of Stranger Things. A time jump for the last season isn’t officially confirmed, but it is heavily rumored that it will happen. What is known, though, is that writing and planning for the season are complete. However, filming has not begun yet, and it will take to film and go through the complete post-production process. Even with the entirety of this process laid out in front of them, it is still being predicted and assumed that the last season of Stranger Things could be available to stream sometime in 2024.
