OK, so now that Netflix has officially dropped Virgin River season four, and we've obviously binge-watched the whole thing, we're looking ahead to a potential season five. Because it's what the people want, right? Here's what we know so far, from release date to storylines and what the cast has said about it.
What has the cast said about Virgin River season five?
*Spoilers* Martin Henderson, who plays Jack in Virgin River, has teased a very "juicy" twist in season five, after it's revealed at the end of season four that he isn't the father of Charmaine's unborn twins.
"I was told who it was supposed to be in the writer's minds, but I haven't seen it written," he teased to Glamour. "One thing I know around here is you can't count your chickens until they're hatched in terms of plot lines.
"I don't know where they've landed on that, but the one I heard is really, really good. It's juicy."
Alexandra Breckenridge, who plays Mel Monroe, revealed in early January 2022 that sadly filming for season five had been pushed back. Taking to Instagram Stories, she said, "We were supposed to start [filming] in March, but it was pushed so... I don't know. I don't know man.
"I'm hoping that maybe we'll start in the summer. It would be nice to film in Vancouver in the summer rather than the winter. To be quite frank with you guys, I'm pretty done filming in Vancouver in the winter. Not really interested in doing that ever again, actually.
"It's really cold. And when you're standing outside in sandals, and little outfits because it's supposed to be the middle of summer... not awesome!"
In a July 2022 interview with Cosmopolitan UK, Colin Lawrence, who plays Preacher, added, "We actually start filming season five in a couple of weeks. I'm really looking forward to seeing the cast again. When we're all together filming, it's like one big happy family. Then when we wrap, it's like everyone kind of bounces back off to their lives. We're all different parts of the globe. But we stay in touch!"
Martin then took to Instagram that same month, to reveal they had indeed started filming, in a caption on 20th July 2022 which read, "Jack’s back! Day 1 of shooting #virginriver Season 5 - feels good to slip back into jacks boots. Hope y’all enjoy season 4 tomorrow!!!! 😀😀🎉🎉"
Has Virgin River season five been confirmed?
Certainly has! Just two months after season three of Virgin River was released in July 2021, Netflix went ahead and confirmed both a fourth and fifth season of the show is happening.
Announcing the news, Jinny Howe, Netflix's VP of original series, told USA Today: "[With] everything that's been going on in the world, people more and more [are] looking for, not just that comfort, but also that feeling of hope and that feeling of community.
"All of that really came together in a way that was really organic, and I think this was more of a proof point that this is a really vital area of programming for us."
Who will star in Virgin River season five?
We can't say for certain which characters will appear in season five, but fans are hoping the main cast will be on screen - Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge), Jack (Martin Henderson), John (Colin Lawrence), Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley), Hope (Annette O'Toole) and Doc (Tim Matheson).
Then there's the reoccurring characters like Brady, played by Benjamin Hollingsworth, and Joey, played by Jenny Cooper, as well as Brie (Zibby Allen), Ricky (Grayson Maxwell) and Mark (Daniel Gillies). And hey, maybe there will be some fresh blood too?
What might happen in Virgin River season five?
*SPOILERS* Season four ended in yet another cliffhanger: while it was revealed that Jack is the father of Mel's unborn child, as oppose to her late ex-husband Mark, fans also discovered he isn't the father of Charmaine's twins. But who is?!
Fans will also hope to find out whether Vince (played by Steve Bacic) is dead or just unconscious, after Preacher knocked him out for threatening to kill Paige (Lexa Doig), and if the pair will take the fall for Wes's death.
Season four also revealed Doc's grandson Denny has Huntington’s disease (which the NHS describe as "a condition that stops parts of the brain working properly over time") and therefore doesn't want to plan a future with Lizzie. But what does that mean for their characters in season five?
When might Virgin River season five be released?
Filming started in July 2022, which means it's unlikely we'll have anything before 2023. Following the pattern of release dates so far, season one dropped in December 2019, season two came in November 2020, and season three in July 2021. Season four came later in July 2022. Surely that means we're due another one next year?! We're pinning out hopes on summer 2023.
