Going into the second volume of Stranger Things season 4, the Duffer Brothers promised that Will’s sexuality would be addressed more explicitly than it had before. Noah Schnapp wonderfully played Will’s journey of self-acceptance, and now the actor is talking candidly about his character.

Noah Schnapp confirms Will’s sexuality and previews what’s next in Stranger Things season 5

Previously, Noah Schnapp had dodged questions about Will being gay, stating that he was growing up at a different pace than his friends, who were getting girlfriends and wanted to play Dungeons & Dragons less and less. But season 4 fully zoomed in on what’s been going on with Will.

Two pivotal scenes in Stranger Things season 4 vol. 2 touch on Will’s sexuality. One, in which Will cries in the car after giving a speech to Mike, has become a meme, but that doesn’t take away from the scene’s impact. The other finds Jonathan telling his younger brother he accepts him for who he is no matter what.

In an interview with Variety, Schnapp gives fans confirmation about these otherwise vague scenes and teases what’s to come in the Will-centric Stranger Things season 5. (Warning: Spoilers ahead from Stranger Things season 4.)

Noah Schnapp confirms Will is gay

Not only does Noah Schnapp confirm that Will is gay, the actor also speaks on Will’s crush on his best friend Mike (Finn Wolfhard). According to Schnapp, that crush has been slowly building over the course of the series, and it’s something fans have picked up on over time.

Here’s what Schnapp told Variety about Will’s sexuality:

“Obviously, it was hinted at in Season 1: It was always kind of there, but you never really knew, is it just him growing up slower than his friends? Now that he’s gotten older, they made it a very real, obvious thing. Now it’s 100% clear that he is gay and he does love Mike.”

Although Will doesn’t actually say the words and come out in Stranger Things season 4, his story unfolded with care and relatability. Will’s journey has only just begun. He’s still worried about being accepted and how his friends and loved ones will react.

Thankfully, Jonathan noticed he was struggling and was there for him when he needed it most. Schnapp also told Variety that the heartfelt scene between the Byers brothers wasn’t in the original script but was written while filming to further flesh out Will’s personal storyline.

Noah Schnapp - Stranger Things season 5

What’s next for Will in Stranger Things season 5?

The Duffer Brothers have already stated that the final season of Stranger Things will be a big one for Will, as it centers on his coming-of-age and connection to the Upside Down. Schnapp echoed those sentiments to Variety, saying season 5 will put the focus on Will.

While there’s so much left to unpack in the next season, Schnapp hopes to see Will’s coming out moment. We want to see him live his authentic truth with his friends and family, too. Whether he’ll tell Mike and Eleven about his crush remains to be seen, but that’s not as important his his friends showering him in the support he deserves.

Schnapp also hopes to receive answers about why Will was the first victim. In the final moments of the season, Will felt Vecna’s presence like he used to with the Mind Flayer. If that isn’t a tease that the final season has Will’s name written all over it, what does?
