Finally, after a long (and sometimes frustrating) wait, Stranger Things season 4 has an official release date. The fan-favorite show is set to return to Netflix on Friday, May 27 – or, at least, its first half is.

You see, in a first for the hit Netflix series, Stranger Things 4 will be released in two parts – Volume 1 will arrive in late May, before Volume 2 lands five weeks later on Friday, July 1. Still, even though we'll have an agonizing wait for some of season 4's episodes to be released, we're delighted that Stranger Things will be back on our screens very soon.

So there's a lot of Stranger Things 4 news to catch up on.

Below, we've compiled everything else you need to know about Stranger Things season 4, too. As we mentioned in our introduction, Stranger Things 4 will return to Netflix in two parts. Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 will launch on May 27, before volume 2 arrives five weeks later on July 1.

In a letter to fans that was published alongside the launch date announcement, the Duffer brothers – Stranger Things' co-creators – revealed why they had taken the decision to release the show's next instalment in two parts. In short: its development cycle has been extraordinarily long, and season 4's episodes will have longer runtimes than its predecessors.

"With nine scripts, over eight-hundred pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things season 4 was the most challenging yet," the letter reads. "But it was also the most rewarding... Given the unprecedented length, and to get it to you as soon as possible, season 4 will be released in two volumes."

Before the release date announcement, Stranger Things fans had been whipped into a frenzy when a bunch of new posters dropped online in the hour before season 4's launch date was confirmed. Each one sheet depicted reunions between certain characters in each of Stranger Things 4's locations as they walk towards a doorway to the Upside Down. You won't need more than one guess to work out where the four groups will eventually converge, then.

Currently, there's no word on which volume will contain more episodes. Stranger Things 4 will be made up of nine episodes, but we aren't sure which part will have five entries and which will have four.
