Stranger Things season 4 release date updates, cast, renewal, synopsis, trailer, and more (Updated January 2022)
It’s officially 2022, the year Stranger Things season 4 hits Netflix. Unfortunately, there have been no major updates since the year started, but we have to imagine that news is coming soon.
On Stranger Things Day 2021, Netflix revealed the latest news on the Stranger Things season 4 release date. And, it’s not good. We’re going to have to wait quite a while until Stranger Things season 4, even longer than we expected.
At the end of the Stranger Things season 4 episode titles reveal, Netflix announced Stranger Things season 4 is coming in the summer of 2022. We’d been expecting a spring 2022 release date for a while, so this is less than stellar news.
It’s not all bad, though! There have been some rumors about the Stranger Things season 4 release date recently. We thought they were wrong, but if they’re right, we won’t be waiting as long as you might think.
How many seasons of Stranger Things are there?
Right now, there are three seasons of Stranger Things available to stream on Netflix. The first season premiered in July 2016. The second season was released in October 2017, and then the third season was released in July 2019.
Will there be a season 4 of Stranger Things?
Contrary to what you might read on social media, Stranger Things season 4 is happening. The fourth season was expected prior to the release of Stranger Things season 3 in July 2019, and then it was officially ordered and announced in September 2019.
Since then, there’s been a lot of confusion about the new season because of the coronavirus pandemic and the production shutdown, which happened in March 2020. It seems some fans thought that meant the season was canceled, but in reality, it meant that the season was delayed.
So, Stranger Things season 4 is in the works and big things are happening!
How many episodes are in Stranger Things season 4?
It’s been reported that there are eight episodes in Stranger Things season 4, just like season 3 and season 1. The second season had nine episodes.
There have been some rumors that Stranger Things season 4 is actually nine episodes. When the Stranger Things Writers posted a picture of all the finished scripts on Twitter, it looked like there were actually nine scripts, not eight.
When is Stranger Things season 4 filming?
Stranger Things season 4 started filming in Lithuania in the beginning of 2020. After a month or so of filming there, production moved back to its regular home base in Georgia. That’s where the first three seasons of the series were filmed.
As mentioned, production shut down in March 2020. It was delayed until the fall of 2020, and then production has gone slower than usual since then, according to star Gaten Matarazzo.
According to the latest rumors, Stranger Things season 4 has officially wrapped production in Georgia, New Mexico, and California, as of September 2021.
This is awesome news, if it’s true, because it means that post-production is underway, or it will be shortly, which means that the release date is officially in sight. We’ll share more updates about the last phase of production as we find out.
We’re expecting post-production will take a while on season 4, given that this is the biggest season of the show so far.
Stranger Things season 4 release date
Netflix officially announced Stranger Things season 4 is coming to Netflix in 2022. This wasn’t a surprise for those paying close attention to Stranger Things season 4 production and what the cast was saying.
On Stranger Things Day 2021, Netflix announced that the new season would arrive in the summer of 2022. That’s a little bit later than we expected.
Since that was announced, Netflix has not shared anything else regarding the season 4 release date. There have been rumors that the release date would be announced on Christmas, New Year’s Eve/Day, and during the Super Bowl. So far, only the Super Bowl remains in play, but that has not been confirmed.
We’ve also seen a few dates make some waves online. Those dates attached to Stranger Things season 4 are May 27 and July 1.
Netflix has not confirmed those dates, so we have no idea if they are accurate, but that’s what the people are saying.
I hope it’s May 27, but is that very likely? We’ll just have to wait and find out what Netflix has planned.

Stranger Things season 3 ending
So much happened in the final episodes of Stranger Things season 3. It’s hard to summarize in the Stranger Things season 3 ending in only a few paragraphs, but we’ll try.
The Battle of Starcourt resulted in the deaths of many Hawkins residents, including Billy Hargrove and Hopper. Obviously, we learned that Hopper is still alive stuck in a Russian prison, but no one knows that yet.
Eleven lost her powers after getting bit by the Mind Flayer monster at the end of season 3, and she no longer lives in Hawkins. The Byers and Eleven finally left Hawkins for, likely, sunnier days. We don’t know where they went, but we think we have a pretty good idea based on some rumors and teasers.
We also know that Eleven and Mike and Jonathan and Nancy were going to stay together. They’d try to make the long-distance thing work.
Those are the main points. The Byers left Hawkins. Hopper is alive, and the rest in Hawkins is not gone. We better pray for the remaining Hawkins Heroes.
Stranger Things season 4 synopsis
Netflix hasn’t shared the Stranger Things season 4 synopsis yet.
We do have a very good idea what the season will be about, though.
Obviously, we’re going to see some part of the story revolve around Hopper getting back to the United States, Eleven, and the rest of the gang. Could Murray and Joyce be involved in that effort to save him? Probably. We also know that Eleven is at risk. We’ve seen a few sneak peeks, and it looks like Eleven could be targetted by Dr. Brenner and his people again. This could be interesting, and it’s definitely something to watch for in season 4.
Back in Hawkins, we’ve seen Steve, Max, Dustin, Robin, and Lucas breaking into Creel House and seeing some kind of supernatural activity. We know an awful crime happened here, based on the teasers, but what is the connection to the story? We’ll find out in TIME. (Get it?)
Based on the new teaser, we know the Byers have moved to California, and we know Mike visits Eleven there on spring break. Then, things get wild! It looks like Eleven will be in danger and possibly gets kidnapped. It also looks like Eleven will get her powers back in Stranger Things season 4.

We haven’t seen the official trailer for the new season yet, but we have seen three teaser trailers so far.
The first teaser trailer focused on Hopper in Russia, while the second trailer confirmed the return of Dr. Brenner.
